Slow Living in a Jar: My Homemade Whipped Body Butter

There’s a sacred kind of joy that comes from making something with your own two hands—especially when that something nurtures your skin and invites you to slow down.
I used to avoid body butters. As a busy mom and homesteader, I didn’t have the patience to wait for oils to soak in before touching things. I wanted fast-absorbing, non-greasy, practical skincare. But over time, I realized that was exactly the point—body butter asks you to slow down. To pause. To care for your body like you would a garden or a sourdough starter—with presence.
These days, I look forward to using it in the evening after a warm shower or when I need a midday reset. It’s a small act of care that reminds me I’m worth the time.
And the best part? I made it myself. I know every ingredient that went into it.
Why I Chose These Ingredients
This whipped body butter blends rich butters and oils—like mango butter, shea, apricot oil, and coconut oil—that deeply hydrate without added toxins, fillers, or preservatives.
You might notice I don’t add any water to my recipe. That’s intentional. Water can cause homemade body care to spoil faster unless you add a preservative—and I like keeping this as clean and shelf-stable as possible.
Pro tip: If you want a lighter application, just wet your hands slightly before rubbing the butter in. It helps it absorb beautifully.
The Essential Oils: Why These Matter
For this recipe, I used DoTERRA essential oils—not just for their scent, but for their therapeutic benefits. These are pure, high-quality oils I trust, and they truly elevate the recipe into something healing.
💧 Frankincense
Often called the “king of oils,” frankincense is known for supporting cellular regeneration and reducing the appearance of scars and wrinkles. It’s grounding and deeply restorative—perfect for nighttime skincare.
🌼 Helichrysum
This is my “secret weapon” for skin healing. Helichrysum is renowned for reducing inflammation, supporting collagen production, and aiding in the repair of skin tissue. If you’ve never used it—this is your sign.
🍊 Wild Orange
Bright and uplifting, wild orange adds a burst of energy and cheer. It’s rich in antioxidants, which help protect the skin from environmental stressors. Plus, it smells amazing.

Ritual Over Routine
This recipe has become a ritual for me—a moment of slowing down, nourishing my skin, and reconnecting with the natural rhythm of the day. Whether you're winding down at night or getting ready in the morning, this butter reminds you to pause.
It’s easy to make, deeply hydrating, and free from anything questionable. Just whole, healing ingredients from nature—and a few drops of joy from my essential oil shelf.
Whipped Body Butter Recipe (My Signature Blend)
This rich, fluffy body butter is made with nourishing oils and essential oils that support healthy, glowing skin—without any toxins or preservatives.
🕒 Total Time: 1 hr 35 min🥣 Makes: ~2 cups
Ingredients
½ cup shea butter
½ cup mango butter (replacing cocoa butter)
½ cup coconut oil
½ cup apricot kernel oil (or use jojoba or olive oil)
20–30 drops essential oils (I used 20 drops Frankincense, 10 drops Helichrysum, 10 drops Wild Orange)
Instructions
In a double boiler or heat-safe bowl over a pan of simmering water, add all ingredients except the essential oils.
Heat gently, stirring until fully melted.
Remove from heat and let cool slightly (just enough so it’s not hot to the touch).
Stir in your essential oils.
Chill the mixture in the fridge for about 1 hour, until it just starts to firm around the edges.
Use a hand mixer to whip for 10 minutes until light and fluffy.
Return to the fridge for another 10–15 minutes to set.
Store in a glass jar with a lid. Keep in a cool place—if your home stays above 75°F, refrigerate to maintain texture.
Use generously on dry skin, or gift to someone you love!
✨ Notes
You can swap out butters or oils depending on what you have on hand. Shea, cocoa, and mango butter all work beautifully. Apricot, jojoba, and olive oil are all nourishing options. Customize your essential oils to suit your skin and scent preferences.
